The publisher provided me with a copy of this book to review via NetGalley.
This book had an instant appeal to it. Jamie is a gamer girl who is stuck playing the role of healer for her raid group simply because she is female. It was amusing the see her group die because she was too busy trying to kill things than keep her group members alive. While that’s the sign of a bad healer in raid groups it was an amusing start to the book and as a female gamer myself I felt an almost instant connection with Jamie.
Before long Jamie is sucked into the past, two hundred years and transported to England through a bureau. It’s here we are introduced to Micah Axelby. He’s an Earl and a proper gentleman. His character was slightly less than appealing to me, perhaps it was his gentlemanly ways that made me not enjoy his character as much. His behavior made sense for someone of some significant standing in that time period but the sheer contrast between him and Jamie, which was obviously a major thing in the novel, at first made it seem too out there.
I loved the banter between Jamie and Micah, whom Jaime called Mike. There were plenty of times when I found myself laughing at what was being said or done in a particular scene. The other minor characters in the book were an interesting mix, though it was hard to see an Earl having such a small staff of servants in his home. I can only assume there were others that simply didn’t make an appearance throughout the story.
The romance was somewhat slow to built as both Jamie and Mike were trying to adjust to being around each other and Jamie needed to adapt to life two hundred years into the past. Of course once they finally let their feelings be shown there were a number of sex scenes that quickly followed and even during those Mike was ever the gentleman.
Overall I enjoyed this book. It was a fun little read with a good mix of historical feel, magic, romance and plenty of humor. I’d recommend this book to those who enjoy romance and things that are not your typical settings. I will probably check out the next book in the series when it comes out in September.
