Movie Review: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

This year I wanted to watch a variety of different SciFi movies to review and figured that since I love anime, it made sense to watch at least one SciFi anime. So after a quick google search, I settled on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I didn’t bother to read what the movie was about, I just jumped right in.

My first thought while watching this movie, which occurred in the first 2 minutes, was  “What is this god awful annoying sound I’m hearing?” I don’t know if it was supposed to be the sound of an insect or bird, but it was such an awful racket that I nearly gave up on the movie right then an there. My second thought was “They might as well throw in an alarm clock going off while they are at it to really max out the annoying noises to make a person hate a movie instantly.” And then a fucking alarm clock lands on her head! This was too funny. Just when I thought an alarm clock needed to be added one smashes its way into the movie.

Things got a bit boring, and sometimes weird, after that. Honestly, if you take out the time travel aspect of this film, it’s just a standard Japanese school story with a bit of a love story mixed in, nothing overly special. It is by far one of the minimalist scifi movies I have watched in a long time.

I think the strongest part of this movie is seeing how Mokoto learns that her constant time jumping can and will have negative consequences. Though it honestly took her way too long to figure this one out, and even when she did start to notice that it had negative side effects, even though they didn’t always affect her directly, it took her a bit too long to try to fix it. In fact, it’s this delay in her trying to fix things that made me feel like she had little to no character development over the course of the movie. The other characters also have very little development, to the point where I can’t even remember their names.

In the end, I felt that this movie was alright, but wasn’t special or great by any means. I am glad that I watched it, because there is more to the SciFi genre than just your standard alien centered movies.

  1. I vaguely remember enjoying this movie, but I don’t really remember much about it. I would agree with your assessment that it was not all that special.

There was a live action sequel that was on Netflix a while back, and it was actually very sad at parts. There are a few scenes from that one that I won’t forget any time soon.

    • I’ve already forgotten most of the movie, so definitely nothing special. I do remember seeing that live action sequel a while back, but obviously couldn’t watch it at the time because I hadn’t seen the original movie yet.
